I must've overlooked it, but I actually DID get Jen's CD package yesterday (after arriving home at 6:30 pm and checking the mail like a normal human). Fabulous artwork on the covers, very slick packaging ... haven't had any time to listen to them yet (to be fair, I want to give it more than a cursory "listen to 15 seconds of each song, make a snap judgement about it" spin before I really say much about it.
I will say this, though ... the tracklisting is almost exclusively (save the Dandy Warhols - excellent!) made up of bands that I have either never heard of or have maybe heard of but never HEARD before. I mean, I've got a subscription to BLENDER magazine, but that doesn't seem to be enough. Here's my question: is that kind of thing a conscious, cultivated effort, to be into bands that are off the radar of the general public, or am I just not "hip" anymore (not that I ever was!)? I might just be in my own little world ... I don't listen to the radio, because they never play what I want to hear ... I hear about new stuff from co-workers (friends) and MTV (gasp, I know, I know ...) It's only in the last two months that I have been exposed to the whole catalog of the Eels and absorbed it like a sponge ... it's awesome stuff ... yet to some, I'm sure the Eels are passe, or "too mainstream." Hmmmm.... makes you think.
Anyways, it appears that my ears are about to be assaulted with some fresh tunes ... hitch up the wagon, Ma, we's goin' to town!
hey haha i sent you one too, it's kind of weird but i hope you like it... it's got... different things...

hey, if you haven't got your CD from me yet, let me know. I sent it over a week ago so it should be well and truely there by now. (sorry to spoil the surprise, but i'm starting to fret that you'll curse me with a bad-CD-sender hex).

ryan,
i was thinking about what you said about would it be purposeful to listen to music "so low on the radar" as you say. and really it's not. it's just pretty much you listen to what you like, you tend to seek out other bands like that. i don't buy rolling stone magazine i buy magnet or venus i also read bust, altho two of those are "women's" zines i find my boyfriend snatches them up faster than anyone, and the guy at border's always says i steal my girlfriend's bust magazine all the time. haha. also i tend to be very excited to get what i listen to out there to other people...perhaps because i like so much stuff and have always been into music big time. i've been going to shows since i was 14..and i don't think i went to a show that cost more than 10$ til i was 20 years ole. many punk shows, many hardcore shows, kentucky hardcore (louisville), emo, emocore, rock, indie, hi fi, low fi, gargae rock you name it. i like to get what i listen to out there for other people to discover, i'm not a snotty scenester who puts what they listen to up on a pedestal. anyways i just got more detroit cobra's stuff and i have been rocking out to them this week. i swear i can't get enough of their 60's do-wp gargae rock because it's far removed from i hear alot of today. by the way Califone and red red meat are nat's favorite bands, and i hadn't listened to califone really much until i met him, he was responsible for getting me into them. as far as the eels go some of their stuff is good, some of it is just too out there fo rme. but i do like about 1/2 their songs on an album. and they aren't really passe, but then again i listen to the dady's.
p.s. glad to see now you like peeking into knitter's blogs! haha
